What Are BSFL?

BSFL stands for Black Soldier Fly Larvae.

They are the young, growing stage of the Black Soldier Fly, a species scientifically known as Hermetia illucens.

And before you think, "Isn't that just a maggot?" — no.

Black Soldier Fly Larvae are a completely different insect from the larvae of common houseflies and other nuisance flies. Black Soldier Flies are not the kind of flies you normally find buzzing around your kitchen or garbage can.

The larvae are the part of the insect that does the work.

They eat.

They grow.

They consume organic material.

And they turn that material into valuable insect biomass that can be used as animal nutrition.

That is what makes BSFL so interesting.

A simple way to understand BSFL is this:

How Are BSFL Made?

Technically, we don't "make" BSFL.

We raise them.

Black Soldier Flies naturally produce eggs. Those eggs hatch into larvae.

The larvae enter their feeding and growing stage.

This is when they become extremely valuable.

Step 1 — Eggs Hatch

Step 2 — The Larvae Eat

The young larvae begin consuming suitable organic feedstocks.

Step 3 — The Larvae Grow

Step 4 — We Harvest Them

When the larvae reach the appropriate stage for their intended use, they can be harvested.

They can then be sold as whole live larvae or processed into other insect products.

Instead of throwing that material away, it can be recovered and processed as another valuable product.

That means the process doesn't have to end when the larvae are harvested.
